I guess memories would provide an energy of sort if they could be siphoned from...and something could feasibly...huh. I don't remember it working that way in the story.

Everything a person does means something; body language, what they leave behind, what they take, what they do, how they perform an action. You take those clues and build a profile based on statistics, psychology and behavior. That will tell you, for example, that the killer is a white male about thirty, middle class, someone who's repressed in his career and his life. You start looking for people that match that description in the area.
