001: [Video/Voice/Action] The FBI doesn't give ransom

[Reid pokes at the communication device a moment, brow furrowed as he tries to figure it out. Finally the video flickers on and Reid is staring down at it. He's dressed in a button down shirt, tie and grandpa cardigan sweater. He's also leaning on a cane. He's nervous but managing to keep his cool. Reid is working at keeping his mind off the last time he was kidnapped. This isn't the same, he thinks to himself. He's not tied up. Maybe this isn't a kidnapping. Maybe...]

Uhm...I-I'm Dr. Spencer Reid with the FBI. I d-don't know who you are or where this is but someone will be coming for me. If you'd like to t-talk, you haven't done anything w-wrong yet. I'm not hurt. You need to talk to me n-now because holding a federal agent against his will is a crime.

R-right. Uhm...wh-what were they on the most wanted list for?

[Reid's tone suggest that he doesn't exactly buy Sam's answer]

Murder, I think. I'm not entirely sure; there were a bunch of complicated charges. Hendrickson gave us a hard time, but we weren't anywhere in the vicinity of the crime. And according to their report, my brother was gunned down by the police... which he obviously wasn't, being alive and everything.

So they had the wrong unsub? They must have run DNA and things like that from the scene. Did local police handle the initial investigation? Sometimes when we're investigating a case, we find the local police missed something that changes the entire case. N-not that we don't ever miss things. No one is perfect but the local police have so many other things to deal with and we just deal with one specialized area.

From what one agent told me, I'm guessing the locals got their signals crossed somehow. I don't know the specifics, though. My brother has a history of petty things like vandalism, but I think I'd know if he'd been shot after torturing and murdering an innocent woman, especially since I was with him on that night. That sort of thing comes way out of left field, you know?

I b-bet. I'm disappointed. The FBI should have c-caught that before they put you two on the Wanted list. I'll have to t-talk to Hotch.

I'm sure the FBI's got more important things to worry about than something like this. Not that murder's not a serious charge, but compared to whatever else the country's currently dealing with, it's easy to see how this could have just slipped below the radar.

Besides, there's been no harm done while I'm stuck here. I just wanted to give you a heads-up, in case you got the wrong idea about us.

Uhm...I don't think anyone is irredeemable so even if you were in trouble there, as long as you're not hurting people here then you've got a chance at redeeming yourself.

... you're a pretty decent guy, then. Thanks.
